Towards a fossil fuel free future in Southeast Sweden

In the Southeast region of Sweden climate protection is an important environmental objective for the future. The region wants to be a role model in the work for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and for sustainable growth. In this spirit the Kalmar Region as well as the City of Växjö has even proclaimed themselves as Fossil Fuel Free regions; an expression of the long term vision of the overall Southeast region.

Since ten years a great variety of initiatives and activities are taking place in the region to involve different actors in common projects and to speed up the already ongoing process. These initiatives are coordinated by regional councils and the regional Energy Agency for Southeast Sweden. They involve the regional industry, universities as well as local authorities and private stakeholders. The Smart Traveller project and the Regional Mobility Agencies are important initiatives in this work.

Smart traveller, Sweden

The project wants to encourage cycling, using public transports, car-pooling and eco-driving by making special offers to employees at 8 to 10 workplaces in the two counties Kalmar and Kronoberg in the Southeast Sweden.

We believe that if people are given the possibility to try a sustainable mode of transport, it can lead to changes in their travel habits.

In the beginning of the project the workplaces will be selected and the activities will be presented for people in charge. When the participants are selected in autumn 2006, a survey of travel habits will be carried out. Then a selection of employees to the different activities will be made and the implementation starts. In the end of the project a new travel survey will be carried out. Those who choose cycling will go through a health check-up in the beginning and in the end of the project.

The companies that participate in the project will profit from it in several ways:

The society will profit through
