Mobility Week in Žilina

The awareness raising campaign on sustainable mobility, negative effects of excessive and unnecessary private cars use in towns, alternatives to individual automobile transport and negative impacts of transport on the environment.

From the initial intention to organise „only“ one-day action „Car Free Day“ it came to realisation of the whole-week-lasting event called „Mobility Week in Žilina“ held in Žilina during the Pan European Mobility Week (16.-22.9.2007).

What activities were held:

  • 7 public discussions and lectures (landscape planning, cycling in towns, public transport, mobility management, road safety....)
  • 2 promotion events of public transport (Open Door Day in DPMŽ -urban transport provider, Operation of eco-trains on local railway track)
  • 3 sport activities (cycle rides and cycle trips)
  • 2 film projections
  • 1 EKO-EXPO festival
  • 1 survey on satisfaction with public transport and cycling in general
  • „Street for people“ - closing one frequent road for cars for the whole weekend and changing it into the Sunday Boulevard (various cultural, entertainment and sport activities took place there)

Signing the Mobility Charta by Mayor of Žilina:

Active interest of municipal representatives in sustainable transport is confirmed by the repeated signing of Mobility Charta by the Mayor and by adopting permanent measures preferring environmentally friendly mobility to private car usage.

The big success is repeated organisation of Mobility Week in Žilina in year 2008 as the message and importance of such activities have addressed many organisations, people and local municipality. What delighted us as well is that the promotion rides of new modern eco-trains on local railway during Mobility Week motivated the competent bodies and in 2008 these eco-trains were put into the permanent operation on this railroad.

Steps of Town Hall up to now:

  • Asphalting the cycle road on the dam of Water Reservoir Zilina (the length 7 km)
  • Adoption of Regulation restricting the entry of cars into the central town zone
  • Reconstruction of streets and pavements in pedestrian zone
  • Renovation of horizontal road marking of existing cycle paths
  • Working-out the Study of cycle routes network in Žilina and its including into the Land use Plan
  • Building-up the multifunction children traffic playground in the residential area of Vlčince
  • Installation of restraints prohibiting car parking on the pavements and the green
