Energy Balance in Italy

Energy Balance of the Province of Chieti

A.L.E.S.A. updated the Carbon Dioxide Balance of the Province of Chieti focusing the attention on the transport sector. The CO2 Balance is based on an energy analysis of the examined area, that is a valuation of the energy flows which get in and get out in the considered inhabited system in a unit of time.

What is the Carbon Dioxide Balance?

It is a systematic analysis tool that involves an assumption of responsibility towards the environment as Kyoto Protocol established.

Methodology

The basic methodology is the conservation of the energy principle; it says that the algebraic sum of the energy exchanges between the system and the outside has to correspond in every moment to the varation of energy stocks present in the system. This principle compares the final uses of the energy with the different renewable sources.

The fundamental criterions for analysing the system are the intensity of the final uses, the employed vectors and the performance of the global chain of the energy transformations. The data of the energy balance divided by sector, and especially those one concerning to the consumptions, are the reference basis for the calculation of the CO2 emissions.

An energy balance analyzed:

  • Exhaustible and renewable energy sources
  • Energy vectors (natural gas, oil products and electric energy)
  • Sectors (residential, industry, agriculture, services and transport)
  • Final uses

The Carbon Dioxide Balance analyses the total energy consumptions in the Province of Chieti from 1996 to the year 2005, in this period, the total consumptions have risen by about 19%.

The consumption by vector of electrical energy and the consumption of the oil products disaggregated by sector have risen by about 37,4% in the course of last 10 years. The most remarkable increase concerns the tertiary sector (+70%), followed by transport sector (+47%) and finally by the industry sector whose consumptions have risen by about 37%.

In the year 2005 the emissions of Carbon Dioxide due to the total energy consumptions of the Province of Chieti amount to about 3.726.506 ton. In the analysed period (1996-2005) the total emissions have risen by about 21%.
