The Mobility in the Province of Chieti

The Region of Abruzzo, in the centre-eastern part of Italy, is made-up of 4 Provinces: L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara and Chieti. The Province of Chieti is placed in the south part of Abruzzo, borders with the Province of Pescara in the north-west, with the Province of L'Aquila in the west, with the Region of Molise in the  south and with the Adriatic sea in the east, stretches for about 2.586,65 Km2 over a territory predominantly made-up of hills and mountains, among which it emerges the Majella Mountains, crossed by Sangro river and washed just by Adriatic sea. The territory is made-up of 104 municipalities of which 9 are placed on the seacoast, it has a population of 391.470 representing the 31% of the population of the whole region with 1.262.392 inhabitants (source ISTAT).

The Province of Chieti has the prerogative to possess, in the same area, a wide variety of resources ranges from natural reserves to old town centres, from archaeological areas to hills, countryside, mountains, seaside, in a few kilometres the landscape changes from the seacoast to the mountaintops of centre-east Apennine. Most people live in the coastal municipalities where the main industries are placed. Having a typically hill landscape, the territory of the Province of Chieti is the ideal place for agriculture that is the most productive sector including most companies of the Province. The industrial sector, instead, includes small-size and middle-size enterprises especially belonging to clothing, food and mechanical industries. In the service industry, the tourism is prospering thanks to the presences of sea, mountains and 10 naturalistic areas protected by regional laws: 8 reserves, 1 nature oasis and the Majella National Park.

A survey conducted by ACI (Italian Car Club) and Eurispes (Institute of Political, Economic and Social Studies) about the mobility in the year 2006 shows that, referring to public transport, the density of the buses in the Province of Chieti for 1000 inhabitants is 4,5, a density that is superior in comparison to the regional one that amounts to 2,2 buses for 1000 inhabitants. The number of buses is especially significant in the biggest towns (Chieti 618, Vasto 281 and Lanciano 187) in which students and workers daily come. Among the 103 Italian provinces in the classification about the public transport, Pescara is among the first twenty positions (16th), L'Aquila is 73rd, Chieti is 81st and Teramo is 92nd.

The use of the bicycle paths is insufficient because their presence is insufficient inside the urban fabric, infact the Province of Chieti shows an indicator equal to 0,01 Km/inhabitant (source Province of Chieti), a very low value, however the projects for the realization of new bicycle paths are numerous in the several cities.

About the transport infrastructures there are three principal typologies: the road net, the highway net and the railway net.

The provincial road and motorway have respectively an extension equal to about 10.461 Km and 88,3 Km. Considering that the resident population in the Province of Chieti is 379.471 people (census ISTAT 2001), the density of the national roads for inhabitant is equal to 0,0016 Km/inhabitant, the density of the provincial roads is equal to 0,0047 Km/inhabitant, while the density of the highways is 0,00043 Km/inhabitant (source ISTAT).  About the circulating cars in the provincial territory the density of cars for 100 inhabitants is 53, a density that is a little bit inferior to the regional one that amounts to 55. Chieti results to be the first province of Abruzzo region in the classification about the quality of the provincial road network.

The provincial railway net amounts to 128 Km (source Province of Chieti) and includes the Public Railway and the Sangritana Railway Inc., the equipment indicator of the infrastructures is significant and puts the Province of Chieti to the 19th in Italy with a value of 152,8 (the National indicator is 100).
